ECODESIGN

Sustainable packaging starts with smart material selection and design.

At SK Functional Polymer (SKFP), we develop and evaluate resin solutions that help manufacturers achieve their sustainability including:

  • Increasing the use of recycled and bio-based materials.
  • Improving the recyclability of finished packaging.
  • Reducing the use of fossil-based plastics derived from naphtha or natural gas.

SKFP has successfully developed solutions for recyclable monomaterial packaging and demonstrated the excellent performance of our tie-layer resins with bio-based plastics and natural-origin materials such as paper and paperboard.

Enabling Monomaterial Packaging with MDO Technology

Together with our parent company, SKGC, SKFP is developing new resins specifically designed for Machine Direction Orientation (MDO) processing.

MDO technology enables the replacement of conventional multi-material laminates with recyclable monomaterial structures. By using compatible resin families, packaging can be more easily collected, washed, and recycled into high-quality recycled resins with excellent mechanical properties.

High-Performance Barrier with Less EVOH

SKFP also offers high-barrier Evasin EVOH with 29% ethylene content. Its exceptional oxygen barrier performance allows the EVOH layer to be reduced to less than 5% of the total film structure in many barrier packaging applications.

Keeping the EVOH content below this threshold improves the recyclability of the packaging while maintaining the high barrier performance required for demanding food and industrial applications.
